Football and Basketball Stats with James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

Saturday night brought out the big time showdown between Infotel and Belize Telemedia at Bird’s Isle. As the BDBA Firms Basketball season continues to roll. In the 1st quarter, Jason Vasquez power Telemedia first with this hammer. He comes back with the triple and would put up 15 pts while leading his team on the boards with 8 rebounds. However, Infotel’s Darwin Elijio responds with this long distance launch for 3 of his 18 game points. Elijio comes to hit another triple, would go 5 for 12 from beyond arc. Infotel boasts a 4 pt lead at the end of the 1st. in the 2nd, Infotel extends the lead propelled by the amazing play of Earl Johnson who comes up with this rebound to stick the put back. It’s string music when Johnson raises up below the 3 pt line and guess what? He would register a a doubles of 34 pts, the game high to go along with 11 rebounds. Earl Johnson earns the highest efficiency rating of 40 with this performance. Lupito Acosta keeps Telemedia in the hunt, hitting 2 of his 14 pts right here.

Another weapon for Infotel is Elvis Olivera who muscles his way down low to score 2 of his 11 and would make it a 2 doubles with 10 rebounds. At the half, the Infotel lead is 7. In the 3rd, Infotel would outscore Telemedia by 15 pts, but 1st Devon Lozano comes with the steal and goes all the way for 2 of his 14 game points. Earl Johnson continues to sizzle, getting 2 Infotel points in heavy traffic. He then deals Darwin Elijio and the 3 is automatic. Hats off to Evan rene who worked the boards for the game high 14 rebounds and would make it a 2 doubles with 14 points. The scoreboard shows 72 to 57 in favor of Infotel at the end of 3. Mark Swift tries to get Telemedia back into the ballgame in the 4th. He would lead B.T.L. with 18 pts, but the big win goes to Infotel in a 93 – 79 final score.

Other results from Saturday finds Belize Water Services dumping the defending champions, Belize Bank Bulldogs 94 to 77, while Mayan Man Warriors got the win over Belize City Council Dragons 87 to 80.

Turning to the football scene. Yesterday’s Belize District 1st Division clash between Stars Academy and Ladyville Jaguars reigned supreme inside the MCC Grounds. Ladyville looks for the early lead when Kevan Young delivers to Hughson Baptist whose header beers outside the sticks. Stars Academy gets its turn to open the scoreboard when Francisco Briceño mounts this nice individual effort to fire the left foot at goal, but goalkeeper Nigel Grant applies the necessary touch. Hughson Baptist is set up by Kevan Young again…this time it’s the foot that derails his attempt to give the jaguars the lead. Steven Baizar then misses from point blank range with the left foot inside the box and let’s just call it a scoreless 1st half because after intermission, the battle explodes. Folks, we’re some 3 minutes into 2nd half when Steven Baizar’s attempt at goal finds the hands of Ladyville’s Joel Ottley and the referee rules penalty. Steven Baizar finds the near corner as Stars Academy takes an early 1-zip lead just like that. 4 minutes later, Clinton Dawson comes up with this mighty individual effort to make it a 2 nil lead for the Stars. Then Nigel Grant’s mistake here hands Jonathan Herrera the easy goal for the 3-zip Stars lead. Ladyville Jaguars looks to answer with this push at goal, but Stars goalkeeper, Elden Linares mounts this determined effort to ensure the scoreboard remains unchanged. It’s more Jaguars offensive when table is set perfectly for Kevin Young who comes up wit a disappointing finish.

Folks, this play is what you call a back breaker. Stars Academy’s Shemar Thompson pushes at an empty goal—Rujuan Baptist covers for the keeper and clears only to see the ball rebounds off Calvin Young to make it a 4-nil ballgame on the dreaded auto goal. Stars look for more…Clayton Fitzgibbon fires the left foot, but the keeper takes care of business. Shemar Thompson comes back looking for his goal, but it’s not to be as Nigel Grant shines. Ladyville finally scores when goalkeeper Linares punch out of goal, falls to Kieron Jones, who gets the Jaguars their sole goal as Stars Academy posts the 4-1 big win.

In other football news, the 2 finalists in the Smart Mundialito emerged over the weekend. City Boys gets a mighty score in the waning moments of 1st play when Adrian Armstrong of Ladyville Rising Stars gets this ball past goalkeeper Kevaughan Tablada into the net, but referee rules it a handball and he is correct. In 2nd half play, Ken Galvez is at the right place and the right time to touch this ball into the net and the league leader moves on to the finals. Game II saw brown Bombers take aim at the Hattieville Riverside Boys and we’re in 1st half play when Hattieville misplays the ball with his hand and the referee awards a penalty. Ken Galvez gets the call and he gives Brown Bombers the 1-nil lead. A mistake by Hattieville gives Ken Galvez a chance to double his tally and he does to make it a 2-zip lead. The score would hold up as Brown Bombers moves on. Thus the final chapter of the Smart Mundialito will be unveiled this Sunday, July 10th inside the MCC Grounds. At 1 p.m., Ladyville Rising Stars and Hattieville Riverside Boys battle for 3rd place and money time comes up at 2 p.m. when Brown Bombers take aim at City Boys.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
