GST Commissioner Says Raffle Met its Goals

Betty-Ann Jones

The raffle was done to give back to the community as part of the tenth anniversary celebration of the General Sales Tax Department. Commissioner Betty-Ann Jones told News Five that the goals set by the department have been accomplished. The raffle incentivized the public into getting businesses to comply with tax regulations.

Betty-Ann Jones, Commissioner, GST

“Today is a very special day for us; it marks our tenth anniversary. It shows the creation of the General Sales Tax department was a success. We’ve managed to accomplish our goals from the inception; we’ve managed to collect the amount of money budgeted in the budget yearly and surpassed it most years.”

“Now why was this program necessary?”

Betty-Ann Jones

“Because the Belizean public has a culture of going into a store, throwing down their money on a counter, picking up whatever good they want and walking through the door. I don’t know if they realize that when they do so, the business person keeps the twelve and half percent that is already included in the cost of that good as an extra profit for themselves. And the money does not come back to government as taxes.”

“So this lucky winner and all these persons that had put in tickets, they are helping with the process.”

Betty-Ann Jones

“They are ensuring that the taxes they pay comes into government. Without taxes, the country can’t move forward; we can’t have businesses keep it as a profit. We need it for education, we need it for health, we need it for roads; we need it just to build the country.”
