Suspect charged in Cayo murder

Story Picture
On March thirty-first from his bed at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, twenty-two year old Pedro Guzman Junior, a resident of San Ignacio, alleged that Police Constable Julio Shal shot him in his hands after Shal and three other men pulled him into a car. P.C. Shal was charged with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. That matter is still pending before the courts. Now, however, the shoe is on the other foot as Guzman has been charged with the murder of twenty-two year old Hershel Brown. San Ignacio police say that on Wednesday both Brown and Guzman, who are acquainted with each other, met on the wooden bridge in the town. It is not certain what words were exchanged between the pair, but authorities say Guzman took a knife and cut Brown across his throat. Brown managed to call out to some people in the area to help him and he was rushed to the hospital. He later died while receiving treatment. According to the police, their investigation has led them to strongly suspect that it was an old feud that triggered the killing. Guzman appeared today in San Ignacio magistrate’s court and has been remanded to Hattieville Prison.
