Opposition Plans to Remove Foreign Minister

Eamon Courtenay

There you have it. After five hours in Washington there is no agreement on the Sarstoon, no structured plan for discussions – not even a date for the next meeting to discuss whatever it is that was discussed in that intensive session. But the Opposition says it has a plan – and it includes the removal of the Foreign Minister.

Eamon Courtenay, Opposition Representative, Guatemalan Talks

“We have called on the government in writing and in public to have a national team appointed. We want a day to day management of this matter. We insist that it is necessary to set up a team that is qualified, that is broad-based, that has the support of international lawyers that are looking at this and managing this on a daily basis pursuant to a plan that achieves our objectives which are – reversal, complete, unconditional reversal of Guatemala’s control of our portion of the Sarstoon River. Secondly – the removal of Guatemalan illegal activity in the Chiquibul which is increasing and thirdly the complete cessation of the raping of our waters in Southern Belize. This requires a national plan and strategy. It requires day to day management and it requires leadership that is competent and that is frank and honest with the Belizean people. We repeat, regrettably, that we have lost confidence in the Foreign Minister’s ability to manage this process and we believe that he should be removed, full stop. He should not continue to have charge of this process because the management by him has been singularly failed. That is the position of the Party.”

Good points. The only way to go. I fully support this.
