Track and Field Athlete Ashanti Carr Recaps Central American Championships
Of the thirteen records set this past weekend in El Salvador, six were clinched by Belizean athletes. News Five spoke with seventeen-year-old track athlete Ashanti Carr, who participated in the four hundred and eight hundred meters run and the four by four relay, as well as Belize Athletics Association President Deon Sutherland.
Deon Sutherland, President, Belize Athletic Association
“We got six gold medals that were record breaking gold medals. And that is definitely a great achievement for athletes. Three of those medals, those records we had before so it was an improvement and then three of them were new records. So I just wanna say judos to those athletes who excelled.”
Ashanti Carr, Athlete, Track & Field
“It was a bit intense because of the age level of them because we were actually participating in a higher league than we’re supposed to participate so it was a bit intense.”

“Your experience—how was it?”
Ashanti Carr
“Well my experience, I liked it because I actually see where I stand right now and I can see what more practice or training I need to put in. You guys should come out to the track and show yourself because I started as young as you guys are and I wasn’t at this level and I actually trained on it and it made us become better. So you guys could come and train and show your talent.”
There are two other competitions to complete the track and field season: there is the North American Central American Caribbean Under-twenty-three championships in which eight athletes will travel to El Salvador in July. This will be followed by the Belize National Championship Games two weeks later.
