Chief Pharmacist Versus Former Health C.E.O. Wraps Up in Supreme Court

Sharon Anderson

The case against former C.E.O. in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Peter Allen, wrapped up this afternoon in the Supreme Court where submissions were made on behalf of Chief Pharmacist Sharon Anderson.  The defamation suit was brought against Allen and Procurement Manager Arik Lima, of Central Medical Stores, following the circulation of an email containing erroneous and libelous information about Anderson.  The electronic message stated that Anderson was on strike and was refusing to sign customs entries for the purchasing of pharmaceuticals.  That email was distributed amid the controversy surrounding the employment of Danini Contreras as Director of Drug Inspectorate.  She is the daughter of U.D.P. Minister Erwin Contreras.  While that angle did not come up in court today, attorney Herbert Panton says that it has been two years since the case was filed.

“Back in 2014, there were a series of emails circulated in the Tender Committee of the Ministry of Health regarding the fact that my client, Mrs. Anderson, was on strike, she was refusing to sign customs entries and things of that nature.  Those emails eventually found their way into the public domain where certain things were repeated, firstly by the then C.E.O. in the Ministry of Health Dr. [Peter] Allen and an employee of the ministry [Arik] Lima.  I believe it was widely published in the media at that time and the statements, those made to the Tender Committee and those that were later made in the press conference; it has always been our contention that those statements were defamatory to our client and so as a consequence of that we brought the matter to court.  It has been languishing in court since 2014 and thankfully today the matter has concluded as far as oral submissions and so we have been given a timeframe to put in written submissions.”
