Is Government Contemplating a Wage Freeze?

Hugo Patt

As we showed you earlier in the newscast, G.O.B. appears to be in a serious cash crunch…so much so that they are trying to raise fifty million dollars from that perpetual cash cow – the Social Security Board. In addition, the pump price for fuel is going up again tonight by a significant amount, always a reliable indicator that government needs cash. The latest IMF Report raised serious alarms on the state of the economy. Government hasn’t responded officially, but are we seeing the signs of fiscal crisis, or at least cause for concern? We know that the IMF has recommended stringent measures including the broadening of the tax base and even a wage freeze. We asked Minister of Labor, Hugo Patt, if he’s been a part of that wage freeze discussion.

Hugo Patt, Minister of Labor

“Certainly I have not looked into that but certainly this government has not been a government that practically looks at what the IMF says. I think it is their opinion and as a government I can tell you for one we are not looking at a wage freeze. On the contrary we are looking at the betterment of this country in terms of our capacities and our deliveries to the people of this country.”

“Did anything in that report cause you any concern at all?”

Hugo Patt

“That’s something that we will be looking at. At this point in time I cannot preempt anything. I would rather have an in-depth look at the report before being able to provide any kind of response at this point in time.”
