Officers on San Pedro get Public Relations Training

Fitzroy Yearwood

In Belize City, police have been meeting and greeting with residents to establish better rapport as a way of curbing violence. While in San Pedro this morning, we found police undergoing training on how to best deal with the public. The police believe that by reaching out, residents will be more willing to cooperate with the formation.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Press Officer, Eastern Division North

“This is a continuation to our workshop that began on second February of this year. We have done all the various relief from precinct three and four and you know that Caye Caulker and San Pedro also fall under Eastern Division North. Three weeks ago, we conducted it in Caye Caulker and now we are doing…well this is the second day of the first leg of San Pedro and hopefully by next week, we can do a conclusion to the same public relations training. I can recall that in a previous interview, I told you that involves the new criminal procedures act; it’s the handling of prisoners in police custody while we stress on police brutality. And then we have the civilian aspect where we try to teach why customers matter and why service matters because we all know that our bosses are our customers, who are the general public. So we try to sensitize our officers based on the various complaints that we have received in the past to try to bring them up to speed as to how to serve the public better.”
