Lisa Shoman Disagrees with Elrington’s Opinion on Internationalizing Border Dispute

Wilfred Elrington

The very strong remarks made by former Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega have gotten very positive attention locally. Vega castigated Guatemala for what he called a troubling shift in foreign policy which had resulted in military aggression at the Sarstoon – and he called for support from the Association of Caribbean States. The positive attention could very likely be because G.O.B. has been criticized for not internationalizing the issue as much as we could, or should – so Vega’s open commentary is welcome. But to internationalize, or not to internationalize – that is the question. Elrington indicated Tuesday that all the repetition is unnecessary. Shoman disagrees.

“The people abroad, for example the people in that forum there, probably know more about Belize than the people here, because they keep themselves informed. They are fully apprised of the situation, so one does not have to repeat all these things. It is for these reasons that you don’t want to repeat it. In a forum like that you don’t want to be in a back and forth.”

“Clearly the former Deputy Prime Minister Gapi Vega doesn’t agree with Minister Elrington because he felt it was important enough to raise the issue in Cuba at the Association of Caribbean States. The Opposition is very much of the view that more than ever the internationalization efforts by Belize have to be vigorous and they have to be sustained. You have to be able to get out there and tell your story first and tell it best. You only have to look at the situation between Israel and Palestine to realize what happens if you do not aggressively put forward your concerns to the world. You cannot in one day cry wolf and say we have a problem on the Sarstoon and then take the position thereafter that everybody knows about it so you don’t need to worry. It has to be sustained. It has to be aggressive and it has to be persistent.”

Elrington, you good for nothing!! WTF is that kind of comment? Its should be brought up in this forums for people to know what is going on.

  2. Mike G. says:

Totally agree, Lisa. Elrington’s and GOB’s “ho-hum” attitude is what has allowed Guatemala to take the initiative and the Sarstoon. Our only hope is the support of the outside world. Guatemala may sign and “agree” to whatever treaty/protocol/agreement BUT will never enforce it upon their people. Our only hope is pressure from the international community. I live and work on the western border and am beginning to worry about which piece of land they will take next. We alone do not have the power to stop them.

Erlington and Barrow are working a secret agenda. I judge them from the way they are behaving. They want to save face in front of Belizeans and are try so hard not to piss off Guatemala. Wonder how much $$$ is in the mix….remember…monkey like dance to money… can’t resist it…

  4. MNHG says:

Thanks lisa Shoman for defending our country, you SURE have more balls than the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In the end we Belizeans will see the reason why the Minister of Foreign Affairs & Barrow are kissing Guatemala. If these cowards don`t resign, after they are KICKED in their asses out of their office , they will laugh and settle in their new homes in Switzerland.
Of course their bank accounts is already there waiting for them !!!
    (Sarstoon…VENDIDO … !!!)

    Very Strong Remarks?? Castigated Guatemala??
I do not understand why Channel5 considers this to be so. I mean, yes, it is good to bring up the Belize/Guatemala issue at an international forum as such BUT Gaspar Vega could have mentioned the DEATH OF DANNY CONORQUIE and SHOULD HAVE stated outrightly and explicity what exactly is happening (Guatemala is not allowing Belizeans in their own river!!!).

I say this because Jimmy Morales brought up the death of a 13 year old.

  6. Manuel Pinto says:
