So What is Guatemala’s Position on Claiming all of Belize?

Lisa Shoman

And then there was that unexpected assertion from Foreign Minister Elrington on Tuesday. He claimed that based on Guatemalan’s repudiation of the 1859 Treaty, that country is now claiming the entire territory of Belize. According to Elrington, “What is the proper situation is to say that they are stopping people from using the Sarstoon because really and truly they are claiming the whole territory as theirs.” Shoman, who is very well versed in the Belize/Guatemala territorial dispute and is herself a former Foreign Minister, told News Five that as far as she knows, that has never been Guatemala’s position.

“The last formal written Guatemalan statement on what its claim was to Belize was in 1999 by a letter written by then Vice-President Edwardo Stein in which he made it abundantly clear that what Guatemala claims is half of the country from the Sibun southwards to the Sarstoon, all of the cayes except for St. George’s Caye which would leave Belize as the only landlocked country that actually has a coastline in the world. That is the entirely of the claim. They have never put in writing anything that goes further than that as far as I am aware. I have checked with my colleagues, former Foreign Ministers and they all say the same. That has never been the position. So that if the Foreign Minister has a position that differ from that, it really is his duty to put that forward to the Belizean people in its entirety. As far as we are concerned that is Guatemala’s claim. So I don’t accept that Guatemala says that it is claiming all of Belize.”

Guatemala should recover its territory of Belice…. Belice belongs to Guatemala not to English pirates of big corporations… The criminal English monarchy should pay a compensation to the people of Guatemala.
