World Ocean’s Day Celebrated in Belize

Alyssa Carnegie

World Ocean’s Day is being celebrated across the globe this Wednesday under the theme, “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet.” Locally, OCEANA Belize is commemorating this day through a Better Bag Initiative – an activity that encourages the public to use reusable bags. Across the country, stores will be giving discounts to customers who shop with these bags. Communications Director at OCEANA, Alyssa Carnegie told News Five about the incentive.

“Most often when you go shopping they’ll give you a plastic bag. What we are trying to do is incentivize the use of reusable bags. I think a lot of people have tried to use reusable bags before, some stores had been given them away and for some reason, it just really hasn’t caught on. So we wanted to make sure that this World Oceans Day that we can really draw attention to the relationship in terms of marine pollution and plastics generally and its impact on marine wildlife by getting people to use reusable bags, say no to plastics and help to benefit by saving some money while they are doing that. We have stores participating countrywide in this initiative. We are very excited about that. I think it is a good indicator of how much people see this as a problem and so we have stores countrywide participating. We have Save U, Brodies, Publics, the Health Store…we have a variety of stories participating. So please check our website, to keep up to date with those stores. And we also have partners like the Belize Audubon Society who is really helping to support this initiative by providing the actual reusable bags. So they normally retail for five dollars, but Belize Audubon is being awesome, as they normally are, by giving the first thirty persons to come to their gift shops or to visit their office a bag for free.”
