Ervin Reneau Gets Life in Prison for Double Murder

Ervin Reneau

A decision was handed down in the case of forty-five year old Ervin Reneau, accused of the double murder of Edgar Ayala and David Longsworth, the son of well-known businessman, Pastor Howell Longsworth. Both were murdered on November thirtieth, 2010. The case was tried by Justice Adolph Lucas. This morning, Reneau was found guilty of the double murder. A written judgement, however, will be delivered at a later date. In sentencing, Justice Lucas told Reneau that he was certain that he had shot and kill Longsworth and Ayala. Only last week, Reneau exited the court confident that he would be acquitted of the double murder, but the evidence against him was overwhelming. A friend who was with Reneau on the day of the double murder saw him shot Ayala and in respect to Longsworth, police forensic tests proved that the nine millimetre pistol used in the murders was given to Suzette Marsden by Reneau to hide, but she handed it over to the police. In sentencing Reneau, Judge Lucas handed down two life sentences to run concurrently beginning today. The trial by judge without jury took almost three months to conclude; it began in mid-February and concluded in mid-May.  Prosecutor in the case, Shanice Lovelle called as many as thirty witnesses and Reneau gave a dock statement for more than half a day claiming he was at home at the time of the murder.   After the verdict, the Longsworth family spoke saying they had forgiven Reneau for taking the life their son.

“We do not rejoice in anybody’s misfortune. And even from the first time, I think the first interview that heard our heart; that we had let go so that the hate and anger does not consume us. We forgave them. People may not understand that, but we want the same thing to happen because hate continues in family that’s why we’re having repeated murders and killings. If we forgive and let go, God is our justifier and as the judge said, he needs redemption so we will be praying for his salvation. That is our responsibility as pastors.”

“How you ma’am?”

“We have forgiven him because we know where our son is and we pray for his redemption; that he can come to that place where he will ask the Lord to forgive him. and that’s what we are praying for.”

Howell Longsworth

“I understood even after years, after David’s death, people were still talking to us, telling us that he was a good man; that he assisted, that he changed their lives. I understand David used to come out at the park and feed all the poor people. During the night, Christmas and special occasions, he would come out and give them hot soup so that was the type of person he was. So his life was changed many, many years ago and we know David so we know where David is. So that is our justification. Although we love our son, we miss him very much; we love him because he was a good son to us.”

“How many children did he die and leave?”

Howell Longsworth

“He had two children—a girl and a boy—one in New York and one in Belize and he was just about to remarry again.”

On the day of the murder, Reneau went to the Texaco Gas Station where he took the gun from Ayala, a security guard, and shot him.  He then went over to Longsworth’s vehicle, where he was with his wife and two children and also shot them. It is believed he thought Longsworth saw him when he shot and killed Ayala.
