Sports Monday: Interoffice Basketball Competition Kicks Off

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The 2016 Interoffice Basketball Competition presented under the Belize District Basketball Association roared into action Friday night with 2 heavy weights looking to get off on the good foot in the season opener as Heritage Bank took on Belikin at Bird’s Isle. Kurt Burgess gets the Bank rolling, making use of this loose ball to finish with a good looking finger roll. Rico Black, sponsor, manager and owner of semi-pro San Pedro Tiger Sharks suited up for Heritage and guess what, he sinks the triple. At the other end, Belikin comes up with the reply courtesy of Naphtali Waters. Of course if you’re a Belikin fan, you would want to keep your eyes on Kadeem Olivera who strips Kurt Burgess and beats everybody down court to finish with an exclamation. At the end of the 1st quarter, Heritage Bank boasts a 14-12 lead. In the 2nd, Felix Martinez gets hot and he knocks down the triple and would give the bank a 14 pt output tonight. Who’s that man with the monster ham…you Andrew Ortiz as he hammers the run with a one hand effort and would show 9 pts 9 rebounds at the end of the ballgame.

However, the Beer has Kadeem Olivera who does it all. He raises up and sinks the 3 points and would put up the game high of 32 pts—more than double the sore of any player tonight as he ties the game at 19 apiece. Unfortunately, Belikin would only score 2 more pts in the remaining 7½ minutes in the quarter. Of course, Kurt Burgess continues his dominance in the paint, coming up with a cheeky underhand and tonight would past up a big time 2 doubles of a team high 15 pts and a game high, 17 boards to earn the highest efficiency rating of 30 pts. Jaleel Arnold pulls up to sink this jumper and would finish with 9. It’s a 13 pts lead for Heritage Bank at the half.

In the 3rd quarter, Kadeem Olivera comes back with a breakaway 2 and guess what, Kadeem would outscore all this teammates by 5 pts, but it wouldn’t be enough. Marlon Arnold gives the bank two more points. Folks, it’s a 21 pt Heritage lead at the end of three. We’re in the 4th quarter, Heritage Bank steps off the gas, but not before Felix Martinez strikes for his double digit 14 points. Heritage picks up the 69 to 59 big win over Belikin to start the season. In Friday’s nightcap, Belize Bank Bulldogs crushed Infotel 78 to 49 while on Saturday’s ticket, Central health crushed Civil Aviation Drones; Belize City Council routed BWSL 81 to 66 and Atlantic Bank dumped Belize Telemedia Limited 70 to 52.

Turning to Smart Mundialito action…Hattieville Riverside Boys handed Face of Belize a 4-1 defeat. Yougn Warriors and City Boys rallied to a scoreless draw. Brown Bombers and Carlston FC also settled for that same score while Collet Strikers edged Reality Youths 1-zip and Ladyville Jaguards also picked up a 1-nil victory over Heights FC. Checking in on Sunday’s All Star Match…the North and the South settled for a 1-1 regular tie, but the North grabbed the win in the penalty shootout. Elroy Arnold was named MVP, meanwhile City Boys lead the Mundialito with 19 pts, Brown Bombers is next with 15 pts. Hatteiville Riverside Boys has 13, Ladyville Rising Stars 12 and Carlston FC rounds out the top 5 with 11 pts.

Turning to the Belize City Primary School Football Tournament on Thursday’s season sending ticket, St. John’s Vianney took the male title with a 3-1 win over Belize Elementary while Ebenezer Methodist took 3rd place from the Salvation Army in a 1-nil affair. On the female side, Belize Elementary emerged Female Champion with a 1-nil win over St. John Vianney, who had to settle for 2nd, while St. Martin De Porres grabbed 3rd place with its 2-nil defeat of St. John’s Anglican. In the meantime, the Belize District Finals are set for today June 6th at the MCC Grounds.

In international news, the CONCACAF Champions League draw 2016 has found Belize’s Police United in Group E along with Olympia of Honduras and Pechuca of Mexico, two of the top clubs in Central America.

Finally in Belize District 1st Division play, Stars Academy picked up a 2-nil victory over Westlake yesterday. In 1st half play, Ryan Simpson uses his body to get the pill to goal to give Stars Academy a 1-zip lead. Steven Baizar could make it a 2-nil lead, but squanders the opportunity from the penalty spot. Late in 2nd half play, Baizar gets another chance to move the scoreboard but he reaches the back of the net instead of the ball. In the winning moments of the ballgame, Steven Baizar finally comes through with this routine tap to give Stars Academy the 2-zp win.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
