Lawyers make Startling Revelations in FIFA Corruption Case

For months a scandal involving widespread corruption in FIFA has continued to unravel. Today, the U.K. based Guardian newspaper is reporting that lawyers representing the football organization have revealed that three high-ranking former FIFA officials secretly gave themselves pay raises and massive World Cup bonuses totalling a whopping seventy-nine million US dollars. According to the lawyers, during their last five years in office former FIFA President Sepp Blatter, former secretary general Jerome Valcke, and former finance director Markus Kattner awarded themselves contracts, bonuses, and other incentives aimed at a coordinated effort to enrich themselves.  Blatter alone received thirty-three point six million US dollars in that time. While Blatter’s lawyers claim the compensation payments were the fair amount for the heads of a major professional sports league, evidence of the payments were only discovered after police raided FIFA headquarters in Zurich.  Moreover, FIFA lawyers pointed out a severe conflict of interest at the heart of the matter, noting that the people who benefited from the contracts were the same people who approved them.
