Brazen Shooting on West Canal

Chester Williams

There was a brazen late evening shooting on West Canal on Wednesday during which a pair of Belize City men were targeted by rival gang members in the area.  Fortunately, the duo escaped unharmed.  Nonetheless, they were later detained pending the outcome of an investigation as it is believed that the men may have been involved in a separate shooting incident.  But what were they doing on known enemy turf?  They told police that they were simply in the area of George Street to pick up someone.  This morning, a press brief was held at the Raccoon Street Police Station to address what seems to be another escalation of gang violence in the Old Capital.

ACP Chester Williams, Commander, Eastern Division South

“From our investigation that we have gathered is that there were two persons in a vehicle hanging out in the area of Prince Street and the canal side and it is basically enemy turf actually and apparently they were spotted by the personnel from the George Street area who then went and fired shots, not at them but within the area to scare them and basically to get them out of the area.  The persons, upon doing so, were intercepted by the police and they are in custody at this time because they are wanted for a shooting over at north side.  These persons are from north side as well and north side police want them for a shooting so we will be handing them over to north side for further investigation in respect to a shooting for which they are wanted on that side of the city.”

“Okay, now sir are you able to say if you all recovered any expended shells from the scene?”

ACP Chester Williams

“No expended shells were recovered from the scene.”

“Were they there, they were in enemy turf, were they there for a reason?  Did you all find anything in the vehicle which suggests why they may have been there?”

ACP Chester Williams

“Well from our interview with them they were saying that they were there to pick up someone and that was the only reason why they were there.  And we have searched the vehicle extensively and nothing incriminating was found inside the vehicle.”

“However you would think big man like this should know the rules of the street. Do you believe the story at face value that they were there to pick up someone?”

ACP Chester Williams

“Well, as a police and as an investigator we try to look at every possibility.  I don’t think that one would want to go into enemy turf just like that.  They would be going there for a particular reason or purpose and hence the reason we detained them.”
