Promotion Self-Employment in Belize City Youths

A city council initiative to promote self-employment has resulted in the handing over of twenty weed whackers to a group of enterprising Belize City youths.  The brainchild of councilors Michael Theus and Dion Leslie, the recipients were selected by constituency.  Each councilor was given an opportunity to identify two individuals within their respective areas.  While the idea is to provide them with the means to establish themselves as yardmen, there are certain arrangements in place, including civic duties that are expected to be done from time to time.  The initiative, according to Mayor Darrell Bradley, falls under the CARILED project.

“The idea in relation to our distributing weed whackers to young people, I want to salute councilor Dion Leslie who has responsibility for sanitation for really jumping onboard big time to say that, “well if our city needs to be cleaner, is there a way where we can provide opportunities for young people to help in that charge and at the same time make a little money?”  And I want really salute councilor Hyacinth Latchman who is the councilor with responsibility for youth and particular focus on making our city a more child friendly municipality who came onboard to say really we can affect particularly young men within our community.  So I pleased that when I look out into this audience the beneficiaries of this gifting are particularly men who, in many cases are marginalized in our society.  We have many programs geared towards women and women empowerment but I think it is a significant focus this afternoon, targeting men and young men within our society and providing this booster.”

“I have decided or opted to tie these two weed whackers to two preschools in the Albert Division.  We have from Sunshine Preschool Ms. Yvonne Castillo… and then we have Ms. Sutherland from Wesley Preschool.  So what these two gentlemen will basically be doing, they will be providing the services, Ms. Castillo and Ms. Sutherland, they are now responsible for the weed whackers.  They are also responsible for cutting your yard.  They are very close in neighborhood to where your schools are, I have spoken to these two gentlemen and you can get their numbers, when you need the schoolyards to be cleaned and cut they will take care of it.  The weed whackers are theirs and they can do their own income generation for themselves or for their persons.”

“For me, under the sanitation portfolio, it carries a long way because now I look at it now, we have so many more people that will assist to the cleaning and the beautification of the city day in and day out while at the same time earning an honest living from this.  So just on that topic alone, on that basis from the sanitation aspect of it, I say thank you all and I encourage you all to use these machines.  They are great machines, the council has been using them for the past year and we’ve had great results with them, to take care of them, use them as much as you can, have an income and you never know, you can grow your little company and when you come back a year from now you can say you went from one machine to five machines and now you’re employing six, seven, eight people.”
