Belmopan Taximan Murdered

Lionel Gillett

The body of a very popular Belmopan taxi-man was found this afternoon in the Rivera area of Belmopan. Forty-five year old Lionel Gillett was last seen by family members at around nine last night as he headed for his home. When he didn’t answer calls to his phone, friends went looking for him at his home and found his body on the front steps of his home. He had been shot multiple times and died there. His house had been ransacked, so Police are exploring the angle of a robbery even as they conduct a post-mortem examination on site this evening. News Five spoke to Superintendent Howell Gillett late this evening as his officers processed the scene.

On the Phone: Supt. Howell Gillett, Officer Commanding Belmopan

“Straightaway I want to say that the investigation is extremely young. It happened a few hours ago, sometime after one, we got the call that there might be the lifeless body of a male person. We proceeded to the area and we confirmed that yes, it was and I can now mention the name because the family has been informed. It is one Lionel Cadle Gillett, a taxi operator here in Belmopan; he was a resident of the same area that he was murdered. It is a very isolated area out of Belmopan, which is adjacent in the Rivera area. The body had gunshot wounds to the abdomen or the stomach area as well as to the head. There is some good indication that it was an area.”

“Sir, would you be able to describe the surroundings in terms of the murder scene? Was he found inside his home, outside his home? Could you give us any more details?”

On the Phone: Supt. Howell Gillett

“Not getting too much into the details of the case, I could say that he was found near the steps of his house, which is outside of the house.”

Mike Rudon

“Were you able to come up—and I know you can’t get into too much detail at this point—but any hint of a motive? For example, was his house ransacked as it might have been a robbery?”

On the Phone: Supt. Howell Gillett

“Well there is no definitive motive at this moment, but yes, preliminary investigation is showing that someone or some persons might have ransacked his house. That is what we observed upon arriving at the area. The body was in a decomposing state and our forensic pathologists are on the scene at this moment as we speak as they are conducting a post mortem that I believe will shed some more light as to what may have occurred. As you know the investigation is pretty young as I alluded to and we have to canvass the area as I said. It is an isolated area so there are few neighbors in the area, but we are doing our groundwork to try to bring closure to this latest incident.”
