Ocean-lovers Hold Hands Against Offshore Oil Development in Belize
On Saturday at midday, Belizeans across the country joined hands on beaches, along sea walls and other public areas to stand in unity against offshore oil development in Belize’s sea spaces. Activists and ocean-lovers congregate annually to host Hands Across the Sands events around the world to, quote, draw a line in the sand, and say no to filthy fuels and say yes to clean energy. Belize was one of eighty-three countries to commemorate Hands Across the Sand. Hundreds of residents from all districts and municipalities participated in the event. According to Oceana Belize’s Vice President Janelle Chanona, “the damage from offshore oil to Belize’s marine environment, whether here or as far away as the Gulf of Mexico, is far reaching – from lost tourism revenue to worsening climate disruption. Today, we are uniting against dirty fuels and speaking out for clean energy that will benefit us all.”
