Alrick Smith

Another Ladyville resident is tonight on remand, following a shootout last Saturday on Marage Road during which twenty-one-year-old mechanic Lionel Rhamdas was killed. Thirty-one-year-old Alrick Smith has been charged for a plot to assassinate an entire Ladyville family in the wake of his brother-in-law’s killing. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

He is no stranger to the law and tonight, the notorious Alrick Smith is behind bars after being arrested and charged for abetment to commit murder upon eleven persons. Today, in the company of attorney Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley, Smith was arraigned before Magistrate Debora Rogers. Bail was denied and he was remanded to prison until June twentieth.

“As you all are aware we had charged Prado and Mister Egbert Baldwin with the three counts of attempted murder, three counts of using deadly means of harm, dangerous harm upon Terence Flowers, grievous harm upon Casey Lozano and wounding upon Lyndon Gillett. Our investigation continued and Mister Alrick Smith has been also charged for abetting the commission of murder upon Miss Cynthia Lozano, Jerome Lozano, Casey Lozano, Athlee Lozano and eight others who we will not name at this time.”

According to ACP Edward Broaster, the charges stem from a shootout in the wee hours of Saturday morning in which Smith’s brother-in-law, Lionel Rhamdas, was killed. Rhamdas along with Darwin Prado and Egbert Baldwin reportedly attacked a group of men socializing at the Lozano family home on Marage Road. Terence Flowers Junior, Casey Lozano, and Lyndon Gillett were all injured. But in the crossfire, Rhamdas was mortally wounded and died on the pavement. Smith, allegedly in a furious rage, made threats to the Lozano family.

“The relation that he has with that particular shooting is the fact that Lionel Rhamdas came from his residence, was living with him; in fact, I believe relation by sister or something of that sort. On that night is when Mister Alrick Smith abetted the murder of the Lozano family.”

With the shooting death of Rhamdas, retaliation is expected. On Thursday, several reports were made that there were four gunmen circling in the Milpa area of Ladyville. Police soon after intercepted a vehicle with at least one relative of Rhamdas.

“This last evening, due to efforts of our police officers in the Milpa/Marage Road area, we came upon a black pickup, 27748, which was driven at the time by Glen Reneau, twenty-four years of a Neal Pen Road address; a juvenile, sixteen years of the same address; one Jermaine Patnett, thirty-one years of Manta Ray Boulevard; Curl Estrada, twenty-five years of Silk Grass Village and Deon Rhamdas of Manta Ray Boulevard in the area of Bobo Hill, near the Marage/Milpa area there. Upon seeing the police, the driver of the pickup picked up speed; however, the police managed to intercept them and we have been conducting searches in the area this morning to see if any firearms or what have you was thrown out.”

Rene “Fat Cat” Chavarria

But the spate of killings in the Ladyville jurisdiction started with the March eighth murder of Rene “Fat Cat” Chavarria. Since then three others have lost their lives to gun violence, including Merkel Pitts, Lloyd Gerald Robateau and most recently Lionel Rhamdas. So what are the police doing to mitigate the ongoing gang war in the village?

ACP Edward Broaster

“I cannot speak to specific operations that we have in the area, but what I can say is that we are covering the area as well as other areas that needs to be maintained. Like I said prior, there is not just three, but four different groups that we have to cover and look at to ensure that we stave off the problematic retaliation of these shootings. Our interdiction effort and prevention effort will be maintained at high alert and we will ensure that we try and provide the necessary security and safety for the residents of Ladyville area.”
