The Asian Community Gives Input on Guatemala Issue

Fred Hsu

The Asian community being an integral part of Belize’s social fabric, along with its involvement in the private sector, we asked a representative of the Belize Chinese Christian Mission to share the concerns of the community on the territorial dispute.

Fred Hsu, Belize Chinese Christian Mission

“The Asian community, we need more education on this issue and also I want to relate it to some of the issues that Taiwan and China, they share a similar situation that we have this kind of tension of the territory, these disputes.  So, we felt that as part of the Council of Churches we come here today to offer our prayers, okay.  We pray for the nation, we pray for the leaders of this country and we pray for our beloved brothers and sisters so that we have peace and then we can have the blessings and protection and the unity and the love of God.”

Phillip Wright

Isani Cayetano

“What’s the council’s position on whether or not the matter should be resolved at the International Court of Justice?  Have you guys sat and discussed a formal position on that matter?”

Bishop Phillip Wright, Anglican Church

“We believe we should go to the ICJ and pursue the diplomatic course.”

The Belize Council of Churches calls upon the Government of Belize, the Opposition and all who are directly involved in the process to remain firm in their effort at maintaining Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
