P.U.P. Leader Lashes Out at PM Barrow for Arbitration Award

All eyes may be to the South and West as the Belize/Guatemala issue percolates. But there’s a financial storm brewing – with wind gusts of just over half of a billion, with a B. We’re talking about the arbitration award which comes due very soon, likely within a couple weeks. The Prime Minister was asked about it recently and he seemed surprised by the concern, claiming that it is actually a victory for the government, and a victory for the people of Belize. Briceño lashed out at Barrow today, saying that the PM probably isn’t worried because he’s not going to be the one paying.

John Briceño

John Briceño, P.U.P. Leader

“Maybe it might be a victory for him because it is not costing him, but it is costing all of us, all the taxpayers of this country. How can you claim victory when you are paying millions and millions and millions of dollars in interest payments because of your arrogance, because of you refusing to go to the negotiating table to settle on a price? Because of that they spent…Honorable Kareem Musa pointed it out in the House – over twenty million dollars have been spent on lawyer’s fees, and it doesn’t matter who collected those fees, but the point is that over twenty million dollars has been spent on lawyer’s fees. The loan, the twenty million dollars US loan that B.T.L. got money from British Caribbean Bank…again when the government acquired B.T.L. they said that they are acquiring that loan also, and then turned around to say that they refuse to pay it because that loan is an illegal loan. How can it be an illegal loan when you got the money? So they went through that whole process and they lost the case. That forty million BZ has turned out to be almost one hundred million dollars that we have to pay, and the Prime Minister is saying now that it is not B.T.L. that will pay it, it is we the Belizean people. In any company if you are making those sorts of decisions you would be fired on the spot for costing the company tens of millions of dollars. We have wasted millions and millions of dollars on this foolishness from the government, and monies that can be used for young people, for sports, for education, for our infrastructure, to help our people in agriculture.”

I guess this is some of “the best is yet to come”. So forget about streets getting fixed, there will not be medicine in the hospitals, the parks will not be fixed etc. cause we are broke. The Prime Minister makes the decisions yet YOU and ME pay the price…so I got paid $200.00 to vote…but in the next years I will pay 10 times more in taxes….hmm….did I make a good deal??? or did I get taken????
