What’s the Latest on Belize and Guatemala on the Sarstoon?

At news time it is still not certain if there are any planned meetings between Belize and Guatemala in respect of the Sarstoon even though government says it is cautiously optimistic about a resolution. The Foreign Ministers of Belize and Guatemala met in Washington last week, but from what we gathered, there have been no further meetings since then. But according to press reports today, the government of Guatemala is advocating to define a “border area” with Belize where there is actually no border defined to avoid new incidents such as the death of the thirteen year old minor last April. The spokesman said that the interest of the President is to define a border area between both countries notwithstanding the adjacency zone. According to presidential spokesperson, Heinz Heiman, the border is not defined until the territorial dispute is resolved but he offered no specifics of his new proposal. Heiman told journalists that the security forces had attacked a family of three, killing a minor. In the same breath, he also reiterated that Guatemala will maintain a permanent military presence of five hundred troops along the borders. All this comes on the heels of a resolution passed by the Congress warning Guatemalan nationals not to travel to Belize.

If a government, can’t or will not update its Nation on issues like this, how can we the people trust them. My personal belief is that GOB is hiding some serious shit, and we need to act as a Nation not politics and demad timed updates. Or we get on the streets
