B.N.T.U. President Shares Perspective on BTV’s Thwarted Sarstoon Expedition

Luke Palacio

B.N.T.U. President Luke Palacio, during a press conference on Monday, shared a rather interesting perspective on recent events in the south, following the passage of the Sarstoon Law.  Palacio told the media that the same manpower used to physically prevent the Belize Territorial Volunteers and its supporters from traveling to the Sarstoon could have been used to provide security for the fleet instead.

Luke Palacio, National President, B.N.T.U.

“The Guatemalan threat is dear to people in Toledo but it has never reached this stage.  I was disappointed, in fact, last Saturday when I left Punta Gorda to come for the Labor Day rally that the Trade Union Congress had organized, to see the amount of resources that the government moved to Toledo, for those of you who are familiar with Joe Taylor Creek, almost every B.D.F. gunboat was there to block our people from moving out of our country.  Those resources could have been used to have those people escort our people to Sarstoon.  So these are some of the things that we at B.N.T.U. are very much concerned about.  In addition to that, it is tantamount to you having your yard, it is not fenced but you have pitbulls because you have a neighbor who from time to time comes to either try and occupy your land or steal something from you.  And when you see your neighbor coming now you decide you will tie your pitbulls and that supposed to be your protection.  Our military supposed to be our source of protection and they were unleashed on us Belizeans to say you’re not going further than this particular point.  So, again it is disconcerting and we believe, and unfortunately in Belize now, whenever you speak out against something that the government would have done you are classified an opposition, you are classified a radical, you are given all sorts of names.”
