An Awareness and Education Campaign on Going to ICJ

Luke Palacio

As we told you, the B.N.T.U. is marching on Friday, to Stand Up for Belize. The union is also embarking upon a series of sensitization forums for teachers.  Those discussions will be centered on the issue of whether or not the unfounded claim should indeed be taken before the ICJ for resolution.  According to Palacio, the matter has become a political issue.

Luke Palacio, National President, B.N.T.U.

“The other matter that the BNTU will be engaging in as a part of this Stand Up for Belize Campaign is that we also need to sensitize our Belizean people, along with the members and teachers of this country, members of the union and teachers of this country about the matters of the ICJ.  The ICJ has become a political football.  The ICJ issue has Belizeans confused and we don’t really know what will be the outcome.  Of course, there are some telltale signs but that’s as far as it goes and so the BNTU has agreed to launch a nationwide campaign or education forum, not a campaign but an education forum, in all six districts of Belize beginning next week.  I’ll have Mrs. Keshia Young-Flowers, our executive secretary, outline that schedule for you and after that we can take your questions.”

“Okay, we have thus far sent out invitations to five bodies: The Bar Association, the Government of Belize, the Opposition, Vision Inspired by the People and the Belize Progressive Party to send representation to these forums.  We begin on May eighteenth in Corozal Town, where Corozal Town Branch and rural branch will come together for the forum.  May twenty-fourth we’ll be in Orange Walk at the Gala Lounge.  On May twenty-fifth we’ll be in Stann Creek at the Ecumenical Auditorium.  On the twenty-sixth of May we’ll be in Toledo.  Toledo rural branch and the Punta Gorda Town Branch together will be at the Father Ring Parish Hall.  On May thirty-first in Belmopan at the George Price Center.  On June first in Benque and San Ignacio at the Sacred Heart Auditorium and June second and third will be the Belize District.  We’ll be in the cayes and in Belize proper, but those allocations are pending.  All of these forums will begin at six p.m. in the evening.”
