Teachers Union Demands the Immediate Withdrawal of Sarstoon Law

Luke Palacio

While the union has only just formulated a position to repeal the Sarstoon Law over the weekend, it is prepared to return to its executive should the Barrow Administration refuse to withdraw the SI.  That meeting, according to Palacio, will determine the next step in opposing the controversial law, which it deems to be in breach of the constitution.

Luke Palacio, National President, B.N.T.U.

“We are asking them to rescind it and if they don’t we will have to bring back our council to decide what other steps we will take.  In terms of the mention of the People’s United Party, it’s coincidental that while they were meeting we were meeting.  Our council was in meeting at the same time, so there is no, it’s just coincidental alright.  But again, the bottom line remains, if the Belizean people are saying to the Government of Belize, almost overwhelmingly, you need to rescind the SI, then why are they not prepared to do so?  And they are the best persons to answer that.”

“From the B.N.T.U.’s perspective, how would you decide what has been happening on the Sarstoon in regards to Guatemala’s actions on the Sarstoon, on both sides of the river inclusive of the Sarstoon Island itself?”

Luke Palacio

“I would answer that this way, Brother Louis, that we do not know what is happening on the Sarstoon because we are not allowed to go there.  Plain and straight.  So therefore, there is need for concern as to what is going on, on the Sarstoon.  Let us say, for whatever reason the government remains intransigent, and say well we are not going to rescind this SI until the month is over then it is then that we’ll find out what happened, what degradation has happened, how much indeed these people have moved over and taken over the place.  But to me and for us at B.N.T.U., our concern is, and like I think most Belizeans, what has been conceded to Guatemala that is being hidden why we have to be every time seem to be appeasing Guatemala?”
