Ryan Alvarez to Stand Trial for Murder

Ryan Alvarez

Almost a month ago, Devon Sankey was freed of the murder of Edward Albert Robinson and the attempted murder of notorious street figure Jamil Betancourt which occurred in October 2015 in the North Creek area, Belize City. Sankey was charged along with Ryan Alvarez who remained on remand. At the conclusion of a PI, the court determined today that there is prima facie case against Alvarez for murder, attempted murder, grievous harm and use of deadly means of harm. But the charge of abetment to murder was dismissed since the alleged partner in crime, Sankey, has been set free.  According to Alvarez, Betancourt told police in a statement after the shooting, that he saw him pointing a gun at him, but he never told police that Sankey shot and killed anyone. The gunman’s intended target was Betancourt, who survived the shooting and is expected to testify against Alvarez.  Despite his submissions, Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser committed his case to stand trial at the next session of the Supreme Court set to commence on June twenty-first, 2016.
