PM and FM Unable to Report on Washington Meetings

Dean Barrow

Now here is the thing. There is, according to the Prime Minister, a breakthrough coming out of the meetings in Washington, but he can’t tell us what that breakthrough is. There is progress, but the Prime Minister is also not able to say what that progress is, in even the minutest detail. There was no information presented on the meetings today, except that they happened. And we already knew that. There were not even crumbs. So the media kept asking, hoping for something.

Dean Barrow, Prime Minister

“None of us is going to get into the details of the exchanges. I am utterly satisfied that in describing the meetings as constructive, in saying that there was a positive spirit, that informed those meeting in looking at the statement of the secretary general put out at the end of the meetings; there is all that is needed to make us feel encouraged, there is all that is needed for us to be able to say to the Belizean public that this is progress and it is the start of what we believe is going to be a negotiation exercise that can and will resolve the problems over the Sarstoon.”

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Wilfred Elrington

“Essentially we have really briefed the PM as to all that we know so that really we are not in a position to give you any more information than he has given you. We have given him all the information on this matter. He has heard from myself, from Alexis, he has heard from Pat who has attended all the meetings and so he is fully ceased of all the details and facts and I don’t think that we can add anything more to what he is saying to the nation than what he is now saying.”
