So What Really Happened in Washington?

Dean Barrow

If all that leaves you shaking your head, we’re in the same boat. But the media persisted, very interested in hearing details about all the splendid progress, and especially interested in this breakthrough in discussion on the particularly volatile Sarstoon.

Dean Barrow, Prime Minister

“Sir, the press conference is to report to the people on the outcome of the diplomatic outreach on so far as it involved those meetings in Washington, given in particular the fact that we had informed the nation of those meetings at Monday’s press conference. It is indeed also an occasion that we make you solve to appeal to the P.U.P. not to go to the Sarstoon in view of what we consider to be the progress made at the Washington meetings.”

“Mr. Prime Minster I leave this press conference scratching my head, nothing has been revealed of substance apart from (my opinion) apart from the fact that we know that these meetings happened.”

Dean Barrow

“I really am experiencing a bit of puzzlement, the media complain loud and long if they ever are of the view and get the sense that government is not in fact ensuring a full information flow. This business if the difficulties with Guatemala and in particular the question of the Sarstoon has gripped this nation, has exercised this nation, it is clearly the duty of the government to report and to report fully. We do this and then you say well you don’t quite understand why there was a need to report? Let me turn the question back on you, would you have been satisfied simply with the statement issued by the secretary general without a word from your government without a word as to what this means potentially in terms of the way forward? I think not…I will answer for you.”

“Sir, there is no further details that you have shared with us that we haven’t seen from the O.A.S. and you say that you can’t reveal the substance of that meeting, that’s all we have gotten so far.”

Dean Barrow

“Mr. Ortiz the substance of the meeting I revealed by way of the statement made by the secretary general. I don’t know if you would have liked and were expecting a sort of blow by blow account of the meeting, that’s not ever what happens please I would want to suggest that you should be well satisfied with the fact that there has been the progress made at the meeting, That we have been able to report which is also contained in the statement by the secretary general and I know that we are absolutely convinced that having the press conference today, to say to the nation what we have said, is absolutely requisite in terms of our general mandate and in terms of our particular obligation, to keep the people of this country informed right along at every step of the way with respect to relations with Guatemala generally and in particular question of the Sarstoon.”

The PM is taking the Belizean public for fools and the OAS is back to business as usual. Time Belizean reporters get some inside contacts at OAS to get some real information…..these official statements are just smoke and mirrors (as usual) but there are people who know, and can give more details off the record.
