Double Murder in Santa Elena Claims the Life of 2 Women

Miriam Mai & Daisy Miralda

There were as many as five murders over the weekend: two double murders in the west and another in the City where a Supal Street affiliate was murdered; all within a day.  The madness started on Saturday at a salon in Santa Elena, Cayo where security guard Andy Bustillos went on a crazy shooting spree. Luckily two persons escaped the shooting, but Miriam Mai, his common-law-wife and her sister-in-law Daisy Miralda were killed instantly. Bustillos then attempted to take his life and tonight he is in critical condition at the K.H.M.H.  It is believed that the violence was triggered because Mai did not wish to reconcile with Bustillos, who shot wildly at customers in the salon. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

The black bows on the doors and the candles placed at the entrance to Betty’s Beauty Salon mark the location where yet another double murder took place in the San Ignacio jurisdiction. The femicide occurred around five-thirty on Saturday inside the salon in Santa Elena that is owned by Miriam Mai. The thirty-nine year old cosmetologist along with her sister-in-law and employee, twenty-nine year old Daisy Miralda were shot to the side neck and head, respectively, by Mai’s ex-common-law husband Andy Bustillos. The murders occurred in front of patrons who were inside the establishment. A patron says that an attempt was also made on her life.

And as we done talk about he, he just come in from the front door, hand Betty wah bag with a Smart phone. And Betty tell ahn ih noh want nothing from you.”

Initial investigation reveals that Bustillos and Mai were recently estranged and he was trying to reconcile the relationship. He presented Mai with a package, but when she refused to accept it, Bustillos, who is a security officer with Anchor Security Company, pulled out the nine-millimeter firearm assigned to him and took aim at Mai’s sister-in-law, Daisy, before turning the weapon on patrons. The last person he shot and killed was his estranged common-law wife.

“Andy Bustillos visited Betty’s Salon with the intent to reconcile the relationship with his ex-common-law wife, Miss Miriam Mai, but he was rejected in the presence of the customers that were at the Salon and as a result, he took out a nine-millimeter pistol that he had in his possession.”

The incident has revealed that, unbeknown to her family, Mai had been living in an abusive relationship with Bustillos for the past six years and several reports had been made to the police in the past month when the relationship came to an end. The motive of the murder, says Superintendent Richard Rosado, is believed to be domestic violence-related.

Supt. Richard Rosado

“I say that because we had two incidents reported by Miss Mai that was domestic related. The recent one was on the third of April where she made a report and Andy Bustillos was charged for harm; the matter is still awaiting trial in the court. Subsequent to that, on the ninth of April, she applied for a protection order from the magistrate and the magistrate granted that protection order against Bustillos.”

Janette Mar, Sister of Miriam Mai

“From what we heard about the witnesses that were there, the girl that was there that he used to work at Smart and he was coming from Smart. And he went across to the bar and he ordered a beer and he told the girl that was working there that right now he will go into the salon and shot all those people that are in there.”

As the family grieves the deaths of Miriam and Daisy, they question whether the murder could have been prevented.

“Our main concern is he was a security officer. We understand that from Smart, he does his shift and goes to Three Flags. Smart on Saturdays, they close the latest by one in the afternoon. As a security company, I believe that after you are finished with your shift, you are supposed to hand in that gun. If you see that your employee doesn’t bring in that gun, it is the responsibility of the employer to go back and look for that gun. So if you do the Math, from one to about five-thirty when the incident occurred, he had in his possession a firearm and knowing that he already had reports against him, restraining order by my art, he could have been of danger to everyone else out there.”

Janette Mar

“Those people who called themselves her friends, they aren’t really her friends because if they knew what she was going through, they would try to help her. Regardless if she told them don’t involve my family in this. They could have saved both lives because it is my sister and my sister-in-law as well. As her children, it is so devastating to see two bodies like that.”

Danielle Rodriguez

“If people would be more proactive in what they do, tragedies like these can be prevented. If he would have turned in that firearm, he would have been in possession of that firearm again until six in the evening when he is supposed to be stationed at Three Flags.”

Both Mai and Miralda were the mothers of three children. Duane Moody for News Five.

Bustillos remains under police guard. He underwent surgery on Monday and is now in a stable condition.
