A Bust of George Price is Erected at the Entrance of the Old Capital

The unveiling of a bust in honor of Right Honorable George Price, Father of Belize’s independence, was held this morning in Belize City.  The idea of placing a sculpture at the entrance of the Old Capital near his namesake highway was the brainchild of the Belize City Council.  Mayor Darrell Bradley then approached the Holy Redeemer Credit Union and requested financial assistance in procuring the piece of work by renowned sculptor, Stephen Okeke.  H.R.C.U. committed to pay for the bust in full and International Environments offered to foot the bill for the construction of the monument.  Today, before family and friends of the national hero, the plaque as well as the work of art paying homage to Belize’s first prime minister was unveiled.

“Uncle George was a person, and I say this and I know I will be supported, was everyone’s favorite uncle, granduncle, great granduncle.  Everybody knew uncle George and they loved him and the day he left us they were also sad and we still remember him.  And so I ask that we all remember him for the man he was, a humble man who cared for Belize and loved Belize and we must all now try to keep on his work that it will remain intact with all our borders secure.  Thank you very much.”

John Briceño

John Briceño, Party Leader, P.U.P.

“Mr. Price inspired this nation and today I am proud not only to lead this party that he loved so much but to be here with you as we dedicate this monument to his work which was always to build Belize.  May it serve as an inspiration to all of us and may the life of Mr. Price be a reminder that we are each called to service and perhaps when that day comes when you walk your children to school and pass this place you will tell your children that Mr. Price believed in Belize and the Belizean people.  I hope you will tell them that as long as we care for one another and serve Belize and as long as each generation of Belizeans fight for what is right and just and with the guidance of our creator we will fulfill our just objective of building a free and proud Belizean nation.  Thank you very much.”

Darrell Bradley

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“I think that when we speak of the legacy and importance to George Price it’s a legacy that all of us as a Belizean nation.  And I think that at this present moment when there is so much going on in our country it is very timely that we would do this so that we could lift up and icon of nationalism and a person who defended Belizean sovereignty and also as a sign of unity for all Belizeans.  So that I think it is quite opportune and it’s a fitting theme that we would do this and it would be a U.D.P. mayor that does it in celebration of the father of Belize’s independence, the father of our nation and our nation forward.”
