Almagro Says O.A.S. Can’t Speak on Rejected Proposals

Luis Almagro

The Secretary General’s brief interview at the Phillip Goldson International Airport was essentially a continuation of an ad hoc question and answer session at the western border on Wednesday which ended abruptly. While Almagro’s itinerary did not necessarily include formal discussions on protocols governing the Sarstoon area, he did meet with Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington.  This morning, we asked Almagro to comment on Guatemala’s rejection of the eleven proposals tendered by the Government of Belize.  His response was concise and economically phrased.

Luis Almagro, Secretary General, O.A.S.

“It’s not in our mandate to reveal points of the negotiations.  This is, what you’re referring to, the situation you are referring to is something that happens in the way of the negotiations of the two countries.  In any case, I don’t think we should have opinions on negotiations that have not ended and have not finished.  So it’s very clear that we should be very confidential about that.”
