A Canero is Shot and Killed in Corozal District

On the phone: Insp. Peter Serano

Meanwhile, in the Corozal District sometime between Thursday night and this morning, the bullet riddled body of a cane farmer was discovered near the village of Santa Rosa.  Fifty-one-year-old Gregorio Abel Espinosa was discovered by members of his family this morning when they decided to enter the area in search of their loved one.  It is believed that Espinosa returned to the vicinity of his cane farm where had been experiencing mechanical difficulties with his truck.  What transpired at the scene of the grisly homicide is unclear, as the body of the canero was found floating in the Rio Hondo River almost three miles away from his vehicle.  His pickup truck had also been set on fire.  Inspector Peter Serano shared the details.

On the phone: Insp. Peter Serano, Deputy O.C., Corozal Police

“Sometime after ten a.m. this morning, police received information of an apparent murder in the area of Santa Rosa, Corozal.  As a result of information received, police were immediately deployed to Santa Rosa where upon arrival the lifeless body of a male Hispanic person was seen by the river bank of the Rio Hondo River with multiple pellet wounds to the right side of the chest and what appeared to be a bullet hole to the left lower ribcage.  The initial investigation so far revealed that the deceased, who is a cane farmer, apparently had some mechanical problems with his cane truck sometime yesterday when he made his way into town and later left his house last night about eleven p.m. in a pickup to stand guard his cane truck and his farm.  There was no communication with the deceased so early this morning family members decided to proceed to the area of Santa Rosa for their loved one where they found his body floating in the river face down.  The body was about three miles away from the cane truck.  His pickup was set on fire and partially burned.  The scene was processed and the body was later transported to the Corozal Hospital where it was pronounced dead on arrival and now awaits an autopsy.  The motive for this murder at this time is unknown.”
