Marion Jones – Minister Vows to See It Through to Completion

The Government of Belize, according to Aragon, has invested north of fifty million dollars in developing sports across the country.  Despite that much capital spending, the Marion Jones Sporting Complex, once the most celebrated, professional, outdoor recreational facility in the country, is yet to be completed after years of construction.  The product of much delay and apparently a scarcity of funds, the stadium is yet to be completed.

Elodio Aragon, Minister of State, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports

Elodio Aragon

“The Marion Jones is not completed as yet to a large extent we have done a lot of work in Marion Jones. I think we are hopeful that within a very short time, we will get this Marion Jones completed. Because work is ongoing every time, it may not be at the big contractor level but its work that are being done by the National Sports Council and we are taking it step by step to get it done. I am confident that the Marion Jones would be a very impressive stadium for Belize and for national sports in Belize. So definitely this is one of the priority for the government right now and we will focus in getting it done. But nevertheless we believe that the investment that the government has done in more than 50 million dollars in the number of years in sports in this country had made us able to host such sporting events at that magnitude at the various districts.”

Well it is a stadium named after a sport cheater. What example are you giving to our sport community? I would prefer they built a stadium anywhere else but this swamp, and name it more fittingly.
