OAS Joint Verification Exercise Conducted in Shooting of BDF Soldier

Today the Ministry of National Security confirmed that based on a Police investigation into the shooting of B.D.F. Staff Sergeant Richard Lambey, they believe that the assailants were Guatemalan citizens of a small border community known as La Rejoya. The incident occurred on Holy Saturday, as Lambey allegedly led a patrol on a water resupply million near Valentin Camp. Officials have been a little tight-lipped, but today National Security C.E.O. explained that all relevant organizations have been doing exactly what needed to be done in the wake of a very sensitive incident.

“Very unfortunate incident, one when you look at it may or may not have been avoided. It depends on how one would look at it. I can tell you that there have been a series of investigations done. Whenever there is any criminal activity or occurrence, what normally happens is that our Police, which has jurisdiction to investigate these matters, which was done, and a report was handed over to us by the Commissioner of Police in that regard. We had also, because this occurred in that area that we refer to as the adjacency zone, which is administered by Belize, which is sort of east of where the border lies within that one kilometer area…we have decided to go in accordance with the confidence building measures, that we would invite the OAS along with our Guatemalan counterparts to do a joint verification and for them also to come up with their findings. That joint verification was done on Monday. I’m still waiting to get a copy of that report, and whenever we receive that we will certainly keep the public informed on what action we will take going forward. I can tell you that we will continue to maintain control over everything that is east of the border…along that whole Western border area, and we will not let this incident stop us from having the type of presence and to keep Belize’s territorial integrity in those areas.”
