Michael Modiri Still Running Scared

Bradley Paumen

Today, Iranian-American businessman Michael Modiri went public for the first time since it was allege in January 2016 that he was the intended victim of an execution plot. In a sensational story which dominated the news for weeks, American investor Bradley Paumen was accused of putting a hit on Modiri and three other persons. Paumen was also charged for framing Modiri in February 2015. Police believe he paid somebody to place a Mossberg rifle in Modiri’s vehicle. Modiri and three others were then arrested on firearm charges when the vehicle was searched at a checkpoint in Saint Margaret’s Village on the Hummingbird Highway. It’s a sordid tale and one which led to Paumen’s detention and arraignment on a multitude of charges. This morning, Modiri would not go into details on the criminal aspect of his relationship with Paumen, but he revealed that he is still very much living in fear.

Michael Modiri, Awarded Compensation

“The past two years has been a disaster. I haven’t been able to pursue my dream that I’ve been working on for eleven years to build a resort here…build an operation here and invest in Belize. Everything is on hold. The past two years have been very bad because as you know I was set up for the guns and I was accused of this and that, and then my life was in danger. I had to live in protective custody. It’s been horrendous and it wasn’t only me. If you remember there were three other victims, one of whom was pregnant at the time who was carried to jail and they were in jail for a period of time and even when they were released there was no compensation to them or nothing, just okay you can go. Their lives have been affected and they have suffered as well.”

“Do you feel a sense of relief that the charge against you was dropped, but also do you feel that there is less of a threat against your life now because of events which have taken place in terms of the charging of Mr. Paumen?”

Michael Modiri

“Definitely I am relieved that the charges against me have been dropped, but as far as the charges against him…in the past three years the way things have gone everything goes his way. I wouldn’t be surprised if he walks free from everything because he’s got his fingers everywhere and he is a powerful man.”

“Has it affected the way you live even now?”

Michael Modiri

“Even right now yes. I can’t walk freely about now. I have to have a security guard escorting me. My family is right now vacationing in Cancun because they’re too afraid to come to Belize to see me. It’s affected every aspect of my life. I haven’t been able to see my children for a while. I didn’t even have my passport for the longest…I couldn’t travel for eight months, so it’s been very damaging.”
