Cyclist Tariq Cano Excels in Mexico

Tariq Cano…you may remember him as the runner up in first season one of Channel Five’s The Belize Apprentice. But what many did not know is that Cano is a cyclist. He’s been riding for over a decade and a half and has been competing since the age of fourteen. Throughout the years, he has represented Belize in several international races in United States and neighboring Guatemala and Mexico. Over the weekend, he competed in Quintana Roo, Mexico and won two races.

“It was a last minute invite; I got it on Wednesday from a Mexican friend. Two races…one on Saturday and one on Sunday in the Quintana Roo area—one was a road race and the other was a criterium. I was using the races as a jump start for the Tour of Belize in this month and so I just use it by going out there, give it my all attacking. I caught the fifteen man breakaway in the first race and in one kilometer to go, I dropped an attack; I started a gap and I drove it to the end and I came out victorious on that occasion. I guess nobody was expecting me to be that strong so I got away with that one. The following day, the race was the criterium. It was a bit more difficult. I caught the breakaway again, but it wasn’t quite easy to get away that time. There were two guys that I couldn’t beat on the sprint and so what I did was on the last two kilometers, I dropped an attack and I just drove it to the end and again came out victorious again.”

“Talk to us about the hard work that you put in to become successful.”

“Well what helped a lot was that in March, I was in Guatemala training more preparation for the cross country and the Tour of Belize. Cross country didn’t go as plan, but I am glad that a week later, I managed to get not one, but two victories. I know I have my goal set on the Tour of Belize and road championship and also a race that the third place for cross country, Belizean Joel Borland, hopefully will also be attending with me in Oklahoma which is called the Tulsa Tough—it’s an international criterium race in Oklahoma.”
