Football, Basketball and Cycling Events in Weekend Sports

Good evening I’m James Adderly and this is Sports Monday.

The 2016 PLB closing season concluded regular season play yesterday inside the MCC Grounds as the Belize Defense Force took on Verdes FC in a bid to ensure a playoff spot. Former champion Verdes with no chance to make the playoffs looked to capture some measure of respect with a win in the final appearance for the season so Ricardo Jimenez powers this left foot bomb but it just rises over the crossbar. 2 minutes later Jamil Cano picks out Gilroy Thurton who squanders the perfect opportunity to open the scoreboard. Verdes continues its ascending when Sam Mendez fires this left foot goal, Tevin Gamboa makes the initial save and then has to deny Marlon Molina. Gamboa might have had to give up his body to keep the scoreboard unmoved. Folks it seems some days are worse than others for real, Marlon Molina turns on this ball with power only to be denied by a necessary touch from the impressive Tevin Gamboa and Verdes wonders if the world is against them. At half we’re still scoreless. After intermission it’s a more offensive BDF team we find on the pitch. Mark Arzu almost moves the scoreboard with this fine looking long distance deal that forces Elroy Rawley to shine with a big time save. Hey guys what’s up with Belize’s #1 striker Deon McCauley? He’s been delegated to the Verdes bench so they send for him. Nevertheless it’s more military when Osman Duran deals perfectly to Harrison Tasher who certainly botches the finish. Keep your eyes on this set piece launch triggered by Osman Duran. Goalkeeper Rawley hangs on the ball which rebounds to Tasher who fires, the ball bounces off Rawley to Paul Nunez who passes to give the B.D.F. a 1 – zip lead. Pumped up Paul Nunez looks to make it a double with this long distance punch, but its right at Rawley who would not relinquish another. The Belize Defense Force hangs on to the 1 – zip win and are into the playoffs. In other results, the Police doubled Wagiya 2 to 1 on Thursday and then held Placencia Assassins to a 1 – 1 tie Saturday night at the Michael Ashcroft. This would have given the Police the #1 seed with 23 points and a pass to the CONCACAF Champions League. However Placencia has filed a protest accusing the Police of playing 3 ineligible players. Stay tuned we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime the Police leads going into the playoffs with 23 points, the BDF is next with 20, the Bandits 18 and Placencia makes the cut with 12 points. Verdes bows out with 10 and Wagiya with 3. Currently the Police leads the bandits 42 to 39 in the race for the CONCACAF pass which makes the playoffs even more interesting. On Saturday the Police travels to Placencia for game one of the playoffs while the B.D.F. and the Bandits also begin on Saturday at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium.

In NEBL news Smart Belize Hurricanes became the 1st team to clinch a playoff seat after hosting Belize City No Limit Friday night. No Limit got off to a good start – Keith Acosta finds Jamaal Augustine who would have a good game leading his team with 17 points. Farron Lauriano continues his MVP pace as he penetrates to get 2 for the Smart team. Lennox Bowman keeps No Limit in the ballgame as he penetrates for 2. Bowman comes back for 3 and would put up a double digit 13 points. Guess what we’ve got a real competition ballgame – at the end of the 1st Hurricanes boast a 4 point lead over No Limit. We’re in the 2nd when Michael Babbles hangs and barks for 2 of his 13 games points. So Akeem Watters gets busy and strikes for 2 of his ten points tonight. Watters would post a 2 doubles with his 11 rebounds. At the half the Hurricanes show a 39 – 33 lead. Michael Babbles cuts the lead to 1 in the 3rd with this move. Babbles deals to Jamaal Augustine who stays hot and we’re tied at 44 apiece. Smart Hurricanes grab a 4 point lead at the end of 3 thanks to Farron Lauriano who sink this easy bullet. Lauriano would finish with the game high of 23 points and would settle with 8 rebounds. In the 4th Smart Belize blows the game wide open. Leroy Lauriano with the steal goes all the way for 2 of his 11 points. Akeem Watters put back makes it a 14 point Hurricanes lead. The Hurricanes would go on to outscore No Limit 19 to 12 in the 4th to post the 74 to 63 big W and clinch the playoff seat. In other action around the league in the role of host Cayo Western Ballaz sprinted past OW Running Rebels in an 88 to 58 blowout. Belmopan Bandits victimized Belize City No Limit Saturday night to win the road game in an 82 to 67 decision.  Dangriga Warriors played big at San Pedro, roasting the Tigersharks 63 to 55. Looking ahead this weekend’s games are critical; Friday night Cayo Western Ballaz travel to Belmopan Bandits and San Pedro Tigersharks, the defending champion will be hosted by Belize City No Limit, on Saturday Smart Belize Hurricanes travel to Independence Thunderbolts while San Pedro heads to OW Running Rebels and on Sunday Independence Thunderbolts will be in OW against the Running Rebels.

In the cricket scene on Saturday we find Excellence of Double Head chasing 99 runs posted by Bright Star of Sandhill. Vernon Stephenson steps up to crash this 6 that gives Excellence the 101 to 99 victory. Stephenson would bat in 28 runs.

Finally in cycling news, 25 riders lines up for the Weekend Warriors A Class Cross Country which travelled from Loma Luz in Santa Elena Cayo to Leslie’s Import here in Belize City and here’s the start. At Ontario Village a lead pack of 5 have an 11 second lead over the peloton featuring Preston Martinez, Kent Gabourel, Robert Mariano, Daniel Cowo and Kariem Flowers. It’s Kent Gabourel of Kulture Tours who steps out to grab the premie at Garbutt gas Station in Roaring Creek. The lead 5 remains intact through to Hattieville. Around mile 11 Daniel Cowo is the sole leader aster extracting himself around mile 13. These 2 riders, Kent Gabourel and Robert Mariano are in hot pursuit. Folks we apologize to the winner Kent Gabourel of Santino’s and to Robert Mariano of Digicell 4G who gave him a run for his money at the tape – I’m afraid we had camera problems. They were clocked at 2 hours, 44 minutes, 45 seconds in the 68 mile ride. Kent Bob Gabourel of Kulture Tours rolls in uncontested for 3rd place. Kareem Flowers of Santino’s jumped out of the 4 man pack to grab 4th place, Preston Martinez of Kulture Megabytes finished 5th, Gilroy Robinson and Isaiah Willacy finished 6th and 7th respectively. In the B Class which for 48 miles Ryan Willoughby of Smart took top honors, Santiago Castillo of Santino’s finished 2nd and Steven Robinson of Caribbean Tires rounds out the top 3. While in the C Class Edward Plank of Stationery House grabbed the win in the 40 miles ride in 1 hour 53 minutes and 12 seconds, Gerald Humes of Digicell 4G took 2nd and Morales of Caribbean Tires 3rd.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
