Mayor Bradley Doesn’t Support Curfew Restriction

Darrell Bradley

While most residents are not against a curfew for minors, the proposal brings to light the issue of parenting or the lack thereof. Recently, the Belize City Council signed on as a Child Friendly Municipality. In a sit-down with Mayor Darrell Bradley, he expressed that the curfew is not the best approach to keeping the city crime free.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“The idea of a curfew and we have to be very careful in relation to the language that we use, we don’t support that. So that when you engage with young people and you are talking with trying to do strategies in relation to preventing crime, I think the police is on the right track in a lot of their community policing initiative; their engagement with various stakeholders. And I think that when you go curfew, that creates a negative image, because first and foremost every effort that you are doing in the city is undermined because you are saying that the city is unsafe. If there is a curfew there has to be a reason why that curfew is there; you have lost law and order. Curfews are declared in times of martial law or in times of hurricanes and disaster when the regular apparatus of the state cannot take control. So we are saying that that is not the right route, but we will support all initiatives of the police, especially those that keep our young people safe.”

Curfews are temporary measures to gain discipline, disasters or emergencies. If this is what is needed to curb crime, then so be it. Give it a try.

Obviously, they have bad parents and it’s too late, so enforce a curfew to control the rampant mayhem.

So, reading this I was furious…. And I’m here to clear things up. First of all, why is every one referring to this these youth like there babies? yes we adults and children all have rights and having a curfew set in place isn’t violating ” Rights of a Child “. In fact it very well maybe helpful.

Secondly, everyone knows that its not easy to shoot and kill another being, nor is it childish or child like to do so, and yet you still take of for the cold blood murders? Go ahead and let these kids out and let them feel like what they did was minor and OK to do, go ahead and let these kids feel like their parents can get them out of every situation or problem.

Thirdly, I personally don’t see what the youth can’t do a little earlier in the day as appose to after hours, I just don’t see a curfew being set in place will “hamper” any chores, playing, after school activities, study groups, shopping, etc. so WHY IS EVERYONE TAKING UP FOR THESE BOYS?

Listen! its sad but, if it was you that the elders assigned to be murdered…. you wouldn’t be reading this right now and you would’t feel that way nor your family. So guys lets do what ever it takes to reduce crime in Belize. Curfew grants parents RELIEF, (knowing their kids are home safe), grants the SECURITY (kids and others are better and safer home than out there on the streets) grants them FREEDOM (to be more family orientated, time to study, time to catch on chores, etc.)

So Mr. Williams, you have my full support!!!!!!!! (A concerned Citizen)

I am in agreement with the Major. To enforce a crew will only put a band-aid on a larger issue at hand. What needs to be done is, charge the parents along with their children committing crimes after dark when they should clearly be in the house. Yes, charge them too, make them accountable for there children actions after dark. Order can only be met with the help of all. Crime will not stop simply because of a curfew set in place. To allow these individuals to clog up our way of life is beyond comprehension, yes, sometime has to be done. Curfew will only make them more illusive and mayhem will be business as usual.
