Did Foreign Minister Deliver Belize’s Strong Message at Washington Meeting?

Wilfred Elrington

The concern by the head of government and his security council was evident following that meeting. From his words it appears that the Prime Minister intended his delegation to O.A.S. headquarters to immediately apprise our international friends of the crisis in the making, the threat to Belize’s sovereignty precipitated by Guatemala’s actions in the Sarstoon. But did the messenger carrying that message, or was it lost somewhere in translation?

“Since you insisted at the first meeting of the O.A.S. with the Secretary-General to raise the issue of the tensions in the Sarstoon, why did you not do so before the Group of Friends and how are they being kept abreast of that tension in the Sarstoon?”

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“Unlike the press in Belize and some sections of the Belizean media everybody whom I meet and talk to abroad are praying and hoping that the kind of peace and tranquility that has prevailed in Belize will continue to prevail in Belize. They understood, they knew quite well the details of what has transpired. In these days of technology you hear the news every day no matter where you are. It is not like they will fall out of their chairs…the Secretary-General in fact was impressed and stated so with the mature way in which the Belizean Ministry is handling this matter…the two governments are handling it, because we may perhaps be the only country or the only region with border problems that have not gone to war or anything like that. We handle them in a very mature and sensible and practical way. And we are very fortunate…I think somebody pointed out that it is now sixteen years since the CBMs are in place. We have had no confrontation with the military, nothing to complain about. We don’t want to be crying that the sky is falling in, and to be crying wolf. We have disputes just like you have disputes between neighbors, just like you have disputes on the streets of Belize with neighbors, friends and family members. We have had those disputes and will continue to have them so long as we continue to live and exist. But the remarkable thing is that perhaps Belize is one of the safest countries in the world.”

Safest until now. What is Sedi aiming for? Mature losers, with a big L on our foreheads? Sedi must understand that maturity will only carry us halfway. We must stop being inert. I truly hope that Belize has an ace under the sleeve to use it at the appropriate time. If not, this thing stinks to high heaven.
