An Attempted Kidnapping of Well-known Orange Walk Businessman

A very well known businessman from the Orange Walk District believes that tonight he is lucky to be alive after what seems very much like a kidnapping attempt, or maybe worse, Sunday night. The individual who asked to remain anonymous told News Five that he was heading back towards town at around ten-thirty after dropping off some persons at San Jose a few miles outside of Orange Walk. He slowed down at a bump in San Pablo, and that’s when two men who seemed to want a ride jumped into the pan of his pickup. He hadn’t gone fifty yards when one of the men held a gun to his head through his open window and told him to turn the vehicle around. He did, and was told to turn into the Douglas road. He did that too, but told us that by that time, thoroughly panicked, he decided to take drastic measures. He then ran his vehicle into a cane-field, swerving side to side until his would-be kidnappers fell into the pan of the pickup. That’s when he jumped out the still moving vehicle and crawled away through the cane-field. He told News Five that during his escape he heard gunshots, but never looked back. From hiding he called family members who immediately called Police.

“Police received information that a Belizean contractor of San Estevan Village, Orange Walk district had been kidnapped while at San Pablo Village, also in the Orange Walk District. Police immediately responded, caused searches to be made in the area between San Roman, San Jose and surrounding villages, and at the entrance of Douglas Village, a blue Toyota pickup was found parked on the ride hand shoulder of the road facing in an easterly direction towards Nuevo San Juan village. The victim was found hiding in a farm which was located about three hundred metres from where the vehicle was parked.”

“In terms of suspects, have you all been able to narrow down the list of suspects?”

ASP Selvyn Tillett

“We have been trying to find anybody of interest but at this moment we still continue in our investigations and we have no suspect as yet.”
