Rommel Catzim

Domestic violence reared its ugly head again in a murder in San Pedro Ambergris Caye. Last Thursday, a woman from the Salvapan community in Belmopan was killed due to domestic violence. Over the weekend on the island, a man lost his life when he was attacked by his wife of thirteen years. She is a forty-five year old Guatemalan national who reportedly endured an abusive and violent relationship.  It all came to a head on Sunday night at their apartment in the San Pedrito area. News Five’s Duane Moody reports from San Pedro.

As the body of forty-three year old Rommel Catzim awaits a post mortem at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City. His forty-five year old wife, Alida Lily Borrayo Barrientos de Catzim remains in custody on San Pedro for his stabbing death. On Sunday night, as the couple socialized at their apartment on Second Street in the San Pedrito area, an argument broke between the two. Rommel, an Orange Walk resident, was fatally stabbed to the chest, back and cut to the eyebrow reportedly by his Guatemalan spouse, Alida. The bloodstains on the verandah of the apartment building are the telltale signs of where Rommel’s body was found.

“It happened on Sunday night about ten, ten-thirty. We didn’t hear anything. We only know that they were arguing and whatever happened. They fought a lot. They would drink and it would always end in them fighting. That’s what we know in this area. They lived there for about five months. They had a son.”

Police arrived on the scene shortly after to discover Alida inside the apartment with the couple’s seven year old son. She was taken into custody.

“Police visited the area where they observed male person lying in a pool of blood with several stab wounds and he appeared to be dead. He was taken to the San Pedro Polyclinic where he was indeed pronounced dead on arrival. His identity was learnt to be Rommel Catzim, forty-three year old Belizean construction worker of San Pedrito area. Initial investigation revealed that Mister Catzim had an apparent domestic issue with his wife Alida Barrientos Catzim, who is a Guatemalan national, where she allegedly inflicted the injuries to Mister Catzim causing his demise.”

By all accounts from neighbors and residents in the area, Alida was in an abusive relationship and many days she would be seen with bruises to her face and body.

Supt. Sandra Bodden

“Investigation reveals yes that there was a struggle. Of course our investigation is still ongoing. We, as I said, have recorded several statements. We are still conducting an investigation into the matter.”
