A Diplomatic Note is Sent to Guatemalan Government

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

This morning, we also asked about the diplomatic note that was to be dispatched to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guatemala, in light of the incursion in the Sarstoon by Guatemalan gunboats on Saturday.  Elrington confirmed that the note has been sent but insisted that such diplomatic practices are not the solution to the issue.

William Neal

“People see this issue as worsening and that at some juncture you are going to have perhaps people losing their lives over this particular issue. When the incident occurred you stated that on behalf of the ministry a strongly worded note of disapproval was sent to the Guatemalan government. This comes of course with the backdrop of the statement made by the foreign minister and also by the newly elected president. Where are we in terms of? And was that note dispatched? And what has been the response?”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“We dispatched a note then and we dispatched another note this week but you need to understand, if it is the perception of the Guatemalan that there will be a committing some kind of envisioning in their land, no note will help us, you have to understand that. I find it so difficult to appreciate how Belizeans and certainly I think it is not the majority of Belizeans because as I walk the street, people shout out commending me on how we are handling these matters.”

In my opinion, Guatemala and Belize should unite as only one nation. I’m belizean.

Well! I was born in united state and my country is vey big. Guatemala is very small. How about Belize? Belize is like a hole in a wall. The union is the wise idea in this case.

I like how you are handling it now too but there is more within our power that can be done.

We cannot and (even if we could) should not go to war over it but neither should we be complacent about this serious matter.

Keep filing the protest but I would also like to hear some public and verbal dissent because if we do not show any interest in our future we cannot expect anyone else to care.
