What’s Sedi’s Take on O.A.S. Involvement? Is Belize Getting Needed Support?

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

Does the government support the re-internalization of the territorial dispute?  The P.U.P. has made that recommendation given the current situation in the south where the Guatemalan military appears to be gaining ground. The Foreign Minister says that G.O.B. is getting support through the regional body, the Organization of American States.

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“We cannot be afford to be look in a negative light by the international community. So it is for that reason that we have the O.A.S. office there and I must emphasize that the O.A.S. is the organization that represents every country in this hemisphere from America, Canada, to Argentina…all our CARICOM countries, all of us are in it. So the suggestion that the Belizean people hate the O.A.S., it has to be ridiculous, it has to be out of an absence of knowledge because if you knew what the O.A.S. meant to us…that is perhaps one of our greatest safeguard in our problem with Guatemala. Now that we have this problem with Guatemala we have been meeting with all the diplomats you know, we have met with the British, we have met with the Americans, we have met with all of them to brief them because in the final analysis that is where our security lies.”

Marleni Cuellar

“Are we seeking support from them or simply providing an update as to what is taking place on the ground?”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

“Belize would not survive without the support of these nations.”

Marleni Cuellar

“What type of support are we asking from them?”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

“Every type, but in all these issues, the most successful instrument had been diplomacy. So we will have our friend in the US and our friends in the UK talk to the Guatemalans, to get the Guatemalans to come around and to agree particularly to have protocols established in the Sarstoon, so that we can better manage the situation.”
