John Briceno Clarifies PUP Demand for Ambassador Alexis Rosado’s Recall

In a release from the P.U.P. issued on Monday, there was a call for the recall for consultations of Ambassador Alexis Rosado who is based in Guatemala. Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington has scoffed at that suggestion, dismissing it as “a most ridiculous call.” Today Briceño clarified that the P.U.P. certainly did not mean cutting all diplomatic ties with Guatemala but that the recall for consultations is a way of sending a very strong message to Guatemala.

John Briceño, PUP Leader

John Briceno

“We are not in any instance saying that we must break diplomatic relations with Guatemala. What we are saying is that in diplomatic-speak when you have a major problem with a government what you do is you recall your Ambassador to come for consultations. Your Ambassador is on the ground in the country and he knows exactly most of what is going on better than us here in Belize. In this case we believe that the government should have called in Ambassador Alexis Rosado to come in and to be able to properly brief the government as to what is taking place in Guatemala. Is the President in control of the country? Is it the military? What is going on? What is the Foreign Minister of Guatemala saying? What is the media saying? What are the people saying in Guatemala? And I believe that by bringing him here he can give the country or the government a proper briefing, one. But secondly and just as important it gives a clear signal to the international body of countries that there is a serious problem between Belize and Guatemalan. That is why you would recall…it doesn’t mean recall forever, or for a year or a month…but whatever time you determine would be enough. This is something that happens all the time between countries.”

We will have more from Briceño later on in the newscast.
