A Cuban National is Busted with 18 Pounds of Weed Near Corozal Free Zone

The Belize Coastguard made a bust today up north which ended in the detention of forty-three-year-old Waldo Bernal Pol, a Cuban national. Pol is in police custody tonight, for almost twenty pounds of marijuana found on him near the Belize/Mexico Border.  A joint operation involving customs, coastguard and B.D.F. personnel on Tuesday night, near the Corozal Free Zone, led to Pol’s arrest.  He is one of two men seen to be acting suspiciously.  When the team of officers approached the duo, the men tossed the bag and fled the scene.  A subsequent search of the area led to discovery of the Cuban national who was hiding not too far away.  The importation of cannabis from neighboring Mexico into Belize has spiked recently as local demand for the drug has increased significantly.  Operations Officer Greg Soberanis, of the Belize National Coast Guard, shares details of the bust.

“Another interagency operation, along with the customs and the Belize Defense Force; just after eight p.m. last night the first bust was in the same Estereo area.  The Estereo area is an area that is known for contraband.  This was made known to us by customs, it’s a hotspot so we operate in that area in support of the Customs Department.  They were able to intercept some contraband flour along with a couple other items.  Subsequently, just about an hour after, they were in the area of the Corozal Free Zone where they saw two individuals.  Upon approaching these individuals they dropped a bag that they had and fled the scene.  The joint patrol retrieved the bag and found eighteen and a quarter pounds of marijuana.  An extended search was conducted in the area where a Cuban national was found hiding in the bushes.  Of course he was detained and handed over to the Immigration Department where he will be processed for an apparent illegal entry.  But like I said, that will be handled by the Immigration Department.  So that incident, we had two incidents that the joint patrol came across last night and were able to make those seizures and we continue to increase our operational tempo with the other agencies operating in

the various sectors.”

  1. Jake says:

One man was found in the area, a lone Cuban – but police believe he didn’t have anything to do with the weed and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He has been turned over to the Immigration Department. So, in total that is 34 and one quarter pounds of marijuana intercepted in the north in less than 24 hours. Police are investigating to see if there is a connection between the two busts. They do believe the weed is coming across from Mexico.
