PUP Leader on Need for OAS at Belize/Guatemala Border

It’s been widely publicized locally and regionally that the O.A.S. is running out of money, and the office at the adjacency zone may have to close its doors. Most Belizeans likely wouldn’t exactly be sorry to see the organization leave, since the perception is that the organization has been firmly on the side of Guatemala. Still, perception on the ground aside, the official line is that the O.A.S. needs to stay exactly where it is. P.U.P. leader John Briceño says his Party is prepared to assist the government in whatever way necessary to make sure that happens.

“We are certainly grateful for the work of the OAS at the border and the confidence building measures they have been working on since they opened up their office. They have pointed out to us that they are running out of funds to keep the office open. I think it is in our interests to keep the office open because if you notice it is not Belizeans that are going into Guatemala, it is Guatemalans coming into Belize. It is important to maintain the OAS at the border because then they can act as mediators between the two bodies. It is important for us and I think we need to do everything possible to cooperate with the government in whatever actions they want to take in order to go to the Friends of Belize and the International Community and the EU which has been funding the office. We need to support the government in their efforts to try to raise the monies from the international community to keep the office open.”
