Are Caneros in the North in Dire Straits?

John Briceno

The 2016/2017 Budget will be presented on Tuesday, and the Opposition has been predicting that it will be anything but uplifting and inspiring. Today P.U.P. leader John Briceño stuck to that forecast, claiming that especially where agriculture is concerned, there are dark days looking. Briceño told News Five today that in the North, sugar cane farmers are struggling to stay afloat.

John Briceño, PUP Leader

“The price continues to go down. Many farmers are not collecting enough money to be able to pay for the cutting and loading of their sugar cane. The Fruta Bomba is closing down. We have the shrimp farms that for six months have been out of production. We have one thousand acres of banana that is going to nothing and citrus with the citrus greening…production continues to go down. I was down south last week and they were telling me that the citrus farmers are not even being paid because the factory has made a loan of five million dollars US which has been approved by the bank but Central Bank has not met to give the approval since last year November. Up to last week they have not given an approval for that loan. We have all of these pressing issues, and on top of this we have the issue of the Free Zone in the North that now the banks have decided…Atlantic Bank has decided that they are not going to take deposits from companies who do business in cigarettes, so that is going to create another major problem for us. At the rate we’re going if government does not step in quickly to try to turn things around or try to find other businesses for the Free Zone, the Free Zone could very well collapse.”

Very well said Johnny!!!!!! Let us see if the people now wants to understand this when they selected the current government or they can convince themselfs of the propaganda ‘ The best is Yet to Come” was just a sham and deceitful. Hope the people realize this and press on calling for early elections.
