Julius Gittens Says Media Must Be Inclusive When it Comes to Social Issues

Julius Gittens

Gittens also spoke of the influence of the media as it relates to social issues. His recommendation is that the media must be accessible to everyone. The media, he says, must be available at all spaces and to all sectors not only those in the urban areas but throughout the country and rural communities.

Julius Gittens, Independent Media & Communications Specialist

“There are some social issues that I have come to have some intimate knowledge of in Belize which I have been able to acquire and want everybody to really examine where the country is and where you want it to go. Now if you have those kinds of spaces for that open and honest way, then you are well on your way of solving and improving the issues. That is where I think it is important for Channel Five and other media houses to take the next step, not being as concerned with the bottom line all the time. Now how can we open that space for active participation of all Belizeans and across all of Belize? I want the views of people of Corozal; I want the views of people yes in Belize City. But I don’t want a Belize City, Belmopan version of Belize. If you are really going to help the people of the country you have to be able to be accessible to all people.”
