FIFA Has New President

A new president was elected today to lead FIFA, the world football body. United European Football Association’s General Secretary, Gianni Infantino won the first but had to go into a second round which then required only a simple majority for him to emerge as the new president of the football organization. Ruperto Vicente was in Zurich, Switzerland today where the elections were held but he has not disclosed who got his vote. A total of two hundred and seven votes were cast. Infantino, a forty-five-year-old lawyer, succeeds Sepp Blatter. Blatter was embroiled in a huge scandal and is serving a six-year ban from football. In his acceptance speech, the new president spoke in French and here is his short statement in English pledging to restore confidence in FIFA. His pitch was about having the required wherewithal to run the finances of the organization.
