Another Security Guard Gives Up His Gun to Fake Cops

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

There are fake cops on the prowl in Belize City, and they’ve already gotten away with two weapons taken from security guards. The latest incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. Two Haitian security guards at the JL’s Quick Loan facility on Douglas Jones Street were approached by two men in what appeared to be Police uniforms. The men were armed and immediately demanded to know if the security guards were armed. Both of them – Thelon Estherame and Hector Lauture claimed to be unarmed, but a search on Estherame turned up a point thirty-eight revolver which the fake cops then pocketed as they ran off. The potential of men in uniform, real or not, wreaking havoc on unsuspecting citizens is causing the Police Department no end of concern. Three persons are already in custody, but until they’re sure they have the right persons Police have sent out a warning to security firms and the general public.

Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations Officer, Eastern Division North

“We know on the tenth of February we had a similar incident where a security officer was approached by two men apparently dressed in what appeared to be Police Number One uniforms. Since then we have been investigating that incident and as recently as Saturday we had another incident where the description was similar to that first incident. Again they went off with a .38 revolver from the security guard they approached. Since then we have put out a warning asking that these security officers be more alert. The approach that we have seen in both approaches wouldn’t be those normally practiced by our Police Officers so from you see them coming I believe it’s on you to try to move to safety. Then when you’re in a safe place you can make a call to 911. We need your help out there to try to capture these two persons who are going around impersonating Police. We have some persons detained right now for questioning that we believe could help us shed some light on this investigation. We cannot disclose any names. We are hoping that the victims from the other incidents could come, revisit your investigator, maybe you forgot something on that day or night that you made the report that you believe could be important in helping us solve these crimes, maybe even identifying the perpetrators of these crimes, so we are asking them to come forward.”
